Helping adolescents find the positives in social media

As school began across the country today, there were stories in most mainstream media about cyber bullying and living in an online world. This article argues that children and adolescents can find a balance when using social media and this can help frame positive thinking. Moderate use of social media, according to a recent study “was associated with a decrease in feelings of isolation, depressive symptoms and anxiety symptoms.” Michael Carr-Gregg, one of Australia’s leading child and adolescent psychologist’s suggests negotiating social media use with your child. Most adolescents, he argues will be reasonable and finding this balance is the right thing to do – it teaches your child to self-regulate.
