A recent study of 14 000 graduates from 38 Universities looked at how prepared students were to enter the workforce when they finished their degree. The table shows the sectors students are now most interested in working in and breaks these down by gender. You may be interested to look at the table also that asked students from eight different discipline areas if they believed their university undergraduate course prepared them well to enter the workforce. Without any doubt the higher education sector is transforming. As part of its vision to become the best University in Australia, Sydney University’s five year plan will see the number of degrees offered reduced from 1120 to 45; more bonus points are being offered to encourage students to choose particular universities (see this table at UTS for example https://www.uts.edu.au/future-students/year-12-bonus ) and Newcastle University is producing a new space at  376 Hunter Street -The Innovation Hub to enable innovators, entrepreneurs , start-ups, developers researchers and students to meet. For our students at school, this is an exciting time to be thinking about the future and the possibilities that some of these changes will provide. Watching workforce trends and capitalising on opportunities in the higher education sector are key to making sound tertiary decisions.
