A child's future is shaped by their experiences today. School is a pathway that determines what they do, where they go and how they get there. A Newcastle Grammar School Scholarship can provide your child with an opportunity to further develop their education and talents and thrive in the future.
Every year, Newcastle Grammar School offers the opportunity for outstanding young students to apply for a Scholarship. As part of the Scholarship Programme, the School hopes to be able to offer a student who may not otherwise be able to attend Newcastle Grammar School the opportunity to be part of our School community.
Scholarships take the form of part remission of tuition fees and are only available to Australian citizens and permanent residents. Scholarships offered by Newcastle Grammar School for 2021 enrolment are listed below.
Registrations for 2021 scholarships are not open at this time.
Applications are invited from internal students and students not currently enrolled at Newcastle Grammar School. Every student regardless of the Scholarship they are applying for must sit the Academic Scholarship Examination. Students currently on a scholarship at Newcastle Grammar School may not reapply. It is a requirement that an Application for Enrolment at Newcastle Grammar School be placed prior to any scholarship offer being offered. All students for Year 7 entry in 2021 are required to attend the Open Day (March 2020) as part of the Newcastle Grammar School Open Day.
Application Fee for external students not currently at NGS
An application fee, for external students not currently at NGS, of $300.00 is required to be paid online directly to Academic Assessment Services. The Scholarship Application Fee also covers the required Application for Enrolment at Newcastle Grammar School. An application fee, for internal students currently at NGS, of $300.00 is required and we will refund $150 to your account after your child has completed the scholarship test, as you have paid the application fee to NGS separately.
Length and Tenure of Scholarships
Scholarships are subject to an annual formal review by the School in the light of progress, performance and attitude of the holder. It should be noted, however, that holders of Scholarships could normally expect the Scholarship to continue for the remainder of their education at the School (or whatever other period for which the Scholarships have initially been offered).
Step 1: Register for the Academic Assessment Services Examination
Students who wish to apply for a Scholarship must apply for the Academic Assessment Services examination by the closing date and sit the Scholarship examination. Click here to apply for Scholarships Online and pay the Application Fee.
Step 2: Return your Application for Enrolment to NGS
Once you have registered for the AAS exam, external candidates are to fill out the Application for Enrolment. Return this form, along with a copy of the last 2 school reports and most recent NAPLAN results, to us by Friday, 13 March 2020. After the Application closing date we will contact you to confirm the examination day procedures. The examination will be held on Wednesday, 25 March 2020, commencing at 8.30am.
Step 3: Open Day Attendance

Step 4: Academic Scholarship Test

After the examination, a short list of applicants will be devised in each of the years and disciplines and these applicants will be invited to the School for an interview with the Deputy Head of School or Head of School.
Initial short listed applicants should be notified in June 2020. A letter will notify unsuccessful candidates as soon as possible after all offers have been made.
Step 5: Accept the Offer
Accept the scholarship, if offered, and pay the non refundable Enrolment Fee.
