Newcastle continues to develop as an educational hub with Newcastle University stating its plans to develop specific precincts – STEMM at Callaghan and a growth of course in the CBD centre. With many of our older students looking at the offerings provided by our local University, this move will certainly enhance the appeal in the future. While aspects of the development are controversial as the article points out, the vision to enhance the educational offerings of the University and the ways this is changing our city is exciting. In March last year it was confirmed that the Japanese privately owned Nihon University had purchased the old law courts in Church Street to establish its first Australian campus. We are still waiting to see what happens on this site. Both projects highlight the tertiary educational future in this precinct. Education as a highly visible and active service in our city will enhance a young persons’ connection and understanding of role education plays throughout our lives.
