Newcastle Grammar School’s Anastasia the Musical set to captivate Newcastle audiences this August.

The hit Broadway musical, based on the beloved animated film, will be presented at the Civic Theatre Newcastle from 17 to 19 August. The captivating production takes audiences on a journey to the past through Europe in the 1920s.

"Our students are excited to bring Anastasia to life. The students and the staff have all shown incredible commitment to taking the production above and beyond, and to really build on the success of previous years. We’re especially thrilled to return to the Civic Theatre to bring the best of Newcastle Grammar’s young performing talent to our city’s premiere arts venue,” said Executive Producer, Musical Director and Newcastle Grammar School’s Director of Music, Kevin Young.

Anastasia, a fictional twist on the events of the downfall of the Russian monarchy, tells a sprawling tale of self-discovery and belonging. Events are set in motion by the reported escape of the Grand Duchess of Russia, daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, from the fate of her family at the hands of the Bolshevik revolution. When two lovable conmen hear of a reward posted by Anastasia’s exiled grandmother, they conspire to find a convincing imposter to claim the reward for her capture. They discover Anya – an orphan with amnesia who bears a striking resemblance to the missing princess. The three embark on a dangerous adventure, hunted by the Bolshevik general Gleb, to escape Russia and travel to Paris. While the conmen conspire to trick the Dowager Empress into believing Anya is her granddaughter, the brave and feisty Anya sets out to discover the truth of her mysterious past and find out who she really is.

Anya’s search for home, love and family is set to a stunning soundtrack including favourites Once Upon a December and Journey to the Past, performed with a live orchestra. The award-winning Broadway show will run at Newcastle’s Civic Theatre this August for five performances only.

Newcastle Grammar School’s major musical productions draw audience members from across the Hunter region, with outstanding performances supported by gorgeous costumes, spectacular sets and thrilling live music. Director Luke Aspinall says: “The level of production the students and staff are bringing to these shows is really exciting. The students have set out to challenge themselves and I think the audience will be amazed to see them really soar.”

Based on the 1997 film of the same name, the musical production of Anastasia from Tony Award winners Terrence McNally, Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, premiered on Broadway in 2017. Since then, the show has captivated audiences throughout the United States, South America, Europe and Japan.

The show opens with a matinee on Thursday 17 August, and runs until Saturday 19 August, with five performances only. Tickets are $25 - $55, with discounted tickets available for concession card holders, family and group bookings.
